People got pretty darn psyched last year when Depeche Mode’s Martin L. Gore and Erasure’s Vince Clarke (himself a founding DM member) announced that they were collaborating on a straight-up techno project for Mute called VCMG.
November’s ”EP1 / Spock” garnered high praise, but it’s likely that the pair’s second outing, ”EP2 / Single Blip,” which gets remixed by some of techno’s absolute masterminds, is the one that’s really going to draw the platitudes. This Beatport exclusive features reworks by the likes of Terence Fixmer, Byetone, Wolfgang Voigt, and Mathew Jonson, the latter of whom offers up a deeply stripped-down take on the classic-style techno jam—and we wholeheartedly approve. Jonson deftly streamlines the original’s harder elements (some thumping tribal drums, a big synth line) and gives them a subtler finish for maximum set-building effect. It’s a beauty of a track—and one you’d do well to play out this weekend.
