It seems like it was out of nowhere that Gotye came onto the scene with that song—you know, “Somebody That I Used To Know feat. Kimbra.” Despite having put out a couple indie records in years past, and having been featured on a Kompakt Total comp, Gotye more or less went from “never heard of the dude” to nearly 170 million YouTube views in, like, two seconds—likely because on the breakup-song scale of 1 to 10, the bitter “Somebody That I Used To Know” registered an “Adele” (to paraphrase/butcher a really bad internet meme).
But every pop-chart topper can benefit from a big-room remix, no matter how much of a downer the subject matter is—heck, the dancefloor is nothing if not welcoming of emotion, right? So the king of the big room, Tiesto, was brought in to give ”Somebody That I Used To Know” the progressive-house makeover it’s been waiting for, and this one gets the full wax job—big drums, big splashes, and an even bigger build-up and vocal breakdown the way only Tiesto can do. Throw in a dash of rave sirens and a sizzling synthesizer, and you’ve got a hit that’s poised to make the jump between the worlds inhabited by twee indie-rockers and thumping clubbers from Brooklyn to Ibiza. Grab the tune here on Beatport, and also check out the way-more-subdued 2009 Supermayer remix of ”Heart’s A Mess,” too.
