For the past few years, Carl Craig’s remix work has been ubiquitous on dancefloors. But lately it seems that having other folks remix C2′s original catalog has become all the rage. Thus far, no less than Slam, Dubfire, and Loco Dice have taken on the challenge of improving, or at least matching, some of Craig’s biggest hits as Paperclip People—”Throw,” “4 My Peepz,” and “Parking Garage Politics” respectively. Now, the always-hip International Deejay Gigolos get in on the action with French producer Sebastien San having a go at another PCP fave, “Oscillator.”
Like so many other current remixes of ’90s classics, the first priority seems to be to polish up the sound palette, meaning that when played back to back, the percussive elements jump out compared to the original’s jumbled rumble. But San also gets playful, matching his own clanging bell to the analog sweeps that define the melody. The addition of some Detroit-inspired pads might be a bit much, but this is still one sure to please folks who remember dancing to this tune the first time around.
