One would never guess that Popeska started his musical life as a dorm-room producer at Georgia Institute of Technology, purely based upon the sheer complexity and depth of his tracks. In 2012, he released his first EP, Karmameter on Wolfgang Gartner’s newly relaunched Kindergarten Recordings, and joined Gartner on his Love & War tour across North America. It’s clear that Popeska has a knack and a sincere appreciation for production, which lets his myriad music influences—including classical, jazz, and folk—shine through. If you had the impression that the American South primarily bred quality music in the form of country and hip-hop, Atlanta-reared Popeska will certainly change your perspective.
Sum up 2012 in three words
It was kind of just like an insane year and I can’t really sum it up really well with three words so I’m just going to go with “crazy and stuff.”
Have a favorite track from last year?
Probably Feed Me’s “Love Is All I Got.” I’m in love with vocals and the vibes from that track, and Feed Me just has this indescribably awesome way of combining his signature style of bass with musicality that just about anyone could jam to. Even my girlfriend likes that track.
Besides you, who else should we keep an eye on this year?
Gotta watch out for Charlie Darker and Pierce Fulton, in particular. I think these dudes really have the right mindset when it comes to making tunes. Other than that, I’m really curious to hear what a lot of the bigger names are going to bring to the table. I have a feeling they’re going to go toward some cool new directions.
Any predictions for 2013, music or otherwise?
I think 2013 will be the year for dance music, mainly because I feel like a lot of dance stuff was getting pretty stale by the end of 2012, so artists will be really trying to do something fresh and soulful this year.
What’s next for you, release-wise and what should we look forward to in the future
Got a lot of releases planned for this year! Been exploring a lot of different sounds and vibes, and I got some pretty unique and fun stuff out of it, so you’ll hear some of the results of that really soon! Other than that, I expect a lot of really awesome festivals and shows. I already can’t wait for some of the gigs coming up this year.
