Artists to Watch 2013

Mixing without monitors, a Diplo adoption wish, and more with rising Canadian talent Ryan Hemsworth

2012 was undeniably the year of Ryan Hemsworth. The Canadian producer of the moment, who earned early acclaim for his work with Chicago duo Supreme Cuts and Oakland rap group Main Attrakionz, rose to fame quickly as the release of his hip-hop-fueled debut solo EP, Last Words, proved to be one of the year’s highlights. Finishing off 2012 by dropping a fun, synth-driven, electro-influenced number, “BasedWorld”—a nod to rapper Lil B—on New Year’s Eve, and following that with the release of the video for “Colour & Movement,” an emotive, minimalist edit of German indie project The Notwist’s “Consequence,” there seems to be no stopping this young producer.

Sum up 2012 in three words.

We did it.

There’s been a lot written about you lately… tell us one thing about yourself that the press has all missed.

I’ve never mixed on monitors or even speakers, really.

Have a favorite track from last year?

“Small” by C.Z. was one of my favorites. The dynamic between this tiny adorable, twinkling synth, clicky percussion, and intense low-end is like a smorgasbord for the ears.

Besides you, who else should we keep an eye on this year?

Cashmere Cat, Deebs, Kaytranada, RAJA, Dreams, D33J. Too many people I need to be careful around…

Any predictions for 2013, music or otherwise?

Diplo adopts me and I finally become the new face of Pepsi.
