It probably won’t stave off any life-threatening situations, but Live At Robert Johnson’s freshly inked compilation The Lifesaver is proving to be essential tool for clearing out the last traces of winter. Released this week, the collection boasts unreleased tracks by some talented new acts alongside the usual cast of luminaries connected to the influential German label and club—Massimiliano Pagliara, The Citizen’s Band, Portable, and the Gerd Janson and Phillip Lauer project Tuff City Kids. There is, of course, an appearance by one of Robert Johnson’s key resident DJs and artists—the inimitable Roman Fluegel.
As a master of the unexpected, Fluegel is content to de- and re-construct the rules of classic uptempo house music again on “More Is Not Enough (Heaven Or Hell?).” The bouncy 4/4 beat occasionally stumbles into a bass-music tempo, and some UK house and acid influences become more audibly apparent the further the track progresses. This track is the quirky standout of a quality compilation, and it’s destined to become a warm-weather favorite in the coming months.
