It strikes me as sort of weird that a label known for trafficking in typically undanceable indie rock would end up getting the rights to music from a South African house star like DJ Spoko, but hey, that’s the way the ball bounces sometimes. (So house labels, catch up!) In any event, Spoko, who was a guiding force behind DJ Mujava’s “Township Funk,” has got a new EP out on True Panther Sounds, entitled Ghost Town, and its truly soulful sound just leaves ‘em all behind. An about-face for the label, but just as much an indicator of their trailblazer status on the US indie landscape.

With each first Friday of the month comes another release from Project Mooncircle, the greatest label on planet earth. Every edition of their Finest Ego series features two up-and-coming artists in a kind of super future-music genre of swelling, endless, electronic majesty. Number four shines the spotlight on Lomovolokno and Sieren, two producers I’ve never heard of. But, like always, leaving your trust in the A&R department over at Project Mooncircle never disappoints. Another Finest Ego, another double A-sider to soundtrack a stroll on a rainy night through blighted industrial landscapes.

There’s a ton of good material out this week, but by far this one tops it for me. Ever since “The Foot,” I’ve been keeping a close eye out for anything new from Ruffhouse. There’s only a handful of producers making this brand of dark and deadly halfstep rhythms, and these guys are at the top of the pile. Now if I can only get on their promo list…
