With weeks like this one, sinking towards the nadir of what’s looking to be a long and brutal winter, the last thing you need are the glossy, feelgood anthems that are tailor-made for open terraces and summer festival sunrises. Mary Velo is surely acquainted with the long, cold slog of winter—the Berlin-based producer is originally from Canada, after all—and her newest production, “Master Mind,” strikes a skilful compromise between the frosty, windswept techno of her previous releases for Frozen Border and Coincidence Records, and the need for memorable peak-time tracks even when there is a chill in the air.
It’s this EP’s B-side remix, an absolute bruiser from Rebekah, that’s been busy in our techno charts this past week, but the original version shouldn’t be slept on. It’s an entirely more melodic proposition and damn near euphoric. It has the kind uplifting chord stabs that have become a dancefloor staple, but Velo rounds off the edges with some foggy minor-key trails. This one is a real earworm, so expect to hear more of it right though until the thaw.
