Being based in Denver, Beatport naturally has an affinity for the annual Communikey Festival, which takes place each spring in neighboring Boulder, Colorado. Now in its sixth year, the gathering—frequently shorthanded as CMKY—has played host to the likes of Kyle Hall, Peaking Lights, Pole, DJ Sprinkles, Deniz Kurtel, Nils Frahm, and tons more international and local electronic music acts.

However, 2013 is “a completely different year for CMKY,” says Creative & Managing Director Kate Lesta. “We’ve created a smaller, more focused program—smaller venues, four days versus five days, and some other key changes that are allowing us to do what we love, better.” The plan, according to Lesta, doesn’t necessarily embrace traditional “bigger is better” growth. “We’d rather grow as a creative community and really develop what we have,” she informs us.

So what’s in store for those planning to attend these four days—April 25 to 28—of revelry? “Musically, all of our artists are very special to us, which is a benefit of having a smaller program,” says Lesta. “Mountains is amazing live; the long overdue return of Safety Scissors; Santa Fe DJ duo Spoolius Melange; Nicolas Jaar’s curation of his label Clown & Sunset’s residency,” are just a few of the performers announced so far, with more to come in early February.

And there’s a philosophical mission to the festival as well: “Our theme this year is Hello Stranger, which will guide attendees and artists to ponder what day-to-day practices in our culture ultimately contribute to or diminish our ability to connect to one another,” Lesta explains. “The festival program explores a sense of intimacy in a community setting—forging lasting relationships and memorable experiences as a foundation for collaboration within our communities and cities.”

The first batch of passes for Communikey have now been made available and will afford purchasers some added incentives, like extra performances, CMKY merchandise, and hotel deals for those in need of lodging. Stay tuned to Beatport News in the weeks to come for more lineup announcements.
