Today, on a special stop on his CNTRL: Beyond EDM tour, techno producer and DJ Richie Hawtin was awarded the key to the city of Windsor, Ontario, his adopted hometown, which he moved to from England at age nine and from which he built his career as one of the world’s most recognized figures in electronic music.

Mayor Eddie Francis presented Hawtin the key to the city during the educational portion of Hawtin’s Windsor tour stop, which took place at the University of Windsor. “In addition to being the world’s best DJ and the most technologically advanced artist in electronic music, Richie Hawtin is being recognized by the city for his continued efforts in advancing art and music with a new generation both here and abroad,” Francis told Beatport News. “His success in his electronic music has brought him well-deserved recognition and yet he has never forgotten about his community, and continues to give back to the city in everything he does.”

Later tonight, Hawtin will play the city’s Boom Boom Room, which celebrates its seventh anniversary with Hawtin, Loco Dice, and Carl Craig performing. “The club has hosted all the greatest acts in the world, including Deadmau5, Tiesto, Avicii, and Benny Benassi to name a few, but hometown legend Richie Hawtin is our favorite,” promoter Renaldo Agostino told us. “Rich continues to be a huge influence in the arts community here in Windsor… We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without Hawtin.”

The CNTRL: Beyond EDM tour continues until November 18th.
